Re: [TCML] Question on Coil with Missing Turns

You can also just cut the damaged turns back 1/2 inch or so, then drill a little hole through the form. Then leave a long enough piece on the good turns to feed them through the hole and solder them on the inside of the coil form (relatively field-free region). Then cover it all with epoxy. It's ugly, but only in a small spot.

No, I didn't have to change a thing.

Hank,
thanks for the info on your experience with the missing turns. Do you recall
if the primary tuning point changed due to the missing turns?

Jim,

I would tend to think you may have nothing to worry about for this reason:
About three years ago, while setting up Zotzilla, which is a 20" by 42"
coil
with a 5 foot corona ring, I inadvertently connected the primary to the
wrong tap. During the subsequent full power run, the coil flashed over in
two places which can be seen by the "splicing tape" on the following
photo:
http://drsparksite.com/images/wwt2011/101.jpg Several turns were removed,
the carbon was cleaned and the wire was carefully spliced back together.
Oddly enough, the coil has never run better. It produces 10 footers with
an
input power of 240 volts, 45 amps and 7.5kva using a 5kva pole xfmr. I
have
purchased new wire, BUT, since it's running so good, I'm not sure if I
really want to rewind it. I'm worried that a rewind would ruin the
performance, although the coil would "look" good again.

Anyway, that's my experience with "missing turns"

Subject: [TCML] Question on Coil with Missing Turns

I have recently obtained a 12" diameter by 45" coil with about 700 turns
of
#18 wire. It had sustained damage from previous operation and my friend
removed the burnt turns and spliced it. There is about six inches of coil
below the gap which is about 1/2" wide. The remaining 39" is above the
gap.
I am wondering if having two coils in series create any significant change
in the coil characteristics? I have run this coil and don't get any corona
at the gap since it was well spliced and covered with epoxy.
