This way you can leave the cradle screws slightly loose so the motor can be rotated to various positions, and each position can be tested to find the best position (longest spark output) by trial and error. I second John's suggestion; being able to dial in your gap presentation with a knob is a wonderful thing. I believe Paul Brodie is selling some small variac cores right now (if he has any left); you might contact him if you decide to go this route.
