2 MOTs can draw well over 10 amps if the primaries are in parallel. Best to
procure a 20 amp variac. Most people eventually end up going for more power
(e.g. 4 or 6 MOTs) & bigger sparks anyway, so the larger variac will be a
good investment. 1 MOT only has a couple of KV output which will make
operating a spark gap difficult, unless you use a DC setup with doublers or
triplers for higher voltage.

I'm working on my first coil and plan to use 1-2x MOTs in series with 1-2
GU-81m tubes. How big if a variac do I need @120vac? I'm guessing a
minimum of 10A, but probably 20A to be on the safe side. What woudl be the
requirement for 1 MOT vs 2?
