LCR circuits is a good place to start research if you are totally new.
Sometimes it works well to follow a cookbook recipe and copy someone
else's design and learn as you go. I never really had success until I
followed a guy's design exactly. Once I did this and kind of "cracked the
nut", it was easier to make coils that worked well.
