Interesting..

The folks who do tesla coils for film/tv production on a regular basis 
don't have those sorts of problems, but they've also got lots of 
empirical experience on what works and what doesn't. (and it's not 
trouble free.. kVA effects's TC managed to kill the motor speed 
controller on ReelEFX's portable tornado with a spark to the structure 
holding the tornado up.)

It would be interesting to find out what was different about the setup.

Is Colin Dancer (the TC builder referenced in the article) on the list 
and can he talk about the coil design and installation?
