Re: [TCML] Primary Coil-sections
Pete,
To connect copper tubing primary sections I fabricate a solid brass
pin which fits snuggly inside the copper tubing. This pin can be
about 1" long. The pin should be slightly curved to match the
curve of the primary coil. I then ream out the inside of the
copper tubing so there's no burr at the edge and so the
inside is bright and shinny. I also file the end of the tubing
to make it smooth and flat. Then I coat the inside of the
tubing ends with soldering flux and also the brass pin.
Then using propane torch I solder the pin into one piece
of tubing letting half of the pin protrude. If any excess solder
blobs up at the end of the tubing, I carefully file this off after
the assembly cools. Then I slip the other piece of tubing
over the pin and solder it into place (use flux). Any lumps of solder
remaining can be carefully smoothed to make a very nice
looking strong joint which is hardly noticeable.
Cheers,
John

Subject: [TCML] Primary Coil-sections
Hi all, I have a quick question. I have been coiling for a few years now
and havent really noticed too much of an issue with this but i am just not
sure of how it may effect the operation of a SGTC. The Primary coil
consists of 1/4 inch copper tubing which is obviously common and my
particular coil had to be made in two sections due to length availability.
Now i have them connected via an amount of alumimun HVAC/ foil tape and
continuity checks out and the output is decent. My question is, does
anybody think that this may affect the primary inductance to a concernable
amount? and might anyone know of a better method of connection for these
sections of tubing? (soldering would not work) Thank you all for your
time! Sincerely Pete.
