Daniel makes an important point here.In general, one can often build something cheaper than buying a kit, but that's only if you value your time at nothing, and you are good at scrounging up parts. There is significant value in someone just having gone through and identified suppliers of the parts and a parts list.
Bear in mind also that often, a kit might be more expensive than a fully assembled device. There's a wide variety of economies of scale in manufacturing.. I just bought 20 PCBs for a project at work, which set me back about $500. The price to get 10 done was $400. So the per unit cost for 20 was $25/each as opposed to $40 each at qty 20.
This is what the whole retail/wholesale thing is about. You might pay $3 each for capacitors in qty 10, and someone who can buy 1000, might get them for $2.50. The retailer has to put up $2500 to get them, and might then sell them in lots of 10 for $2.75, each, as long as their cost to count out the 10 and mail them is <$2.50
