Re: [TCML] Source for Tungsten Rod?
Brandon,
1/8" would work fine for 15kV 120mA. Definitely pure or 2% thoriated, tungsten carbide doesn't work nearly as well.
Even a 4-6 series static gap with aluminum heatsinks would do the trick if you don't want the expense of a rotary.
For two MOTs, like 4kV and a 500mA or so, go for 1/2" tungsten, like the element samples sold on Ebay. Press fit the rod
into aluminum blocks and space them a few thousandths apart and you are good to go, even with a single MOT.
I have a stash of 3/16", 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", and 1.25" tungsten disks 1/16" thick that can be hard silver brazed to stainless machine
screws as well for making tungsten contacts. The problem there is the silver solder that'll actually wet and braze tungsten is like $80/ounce,
it's crazy. Same stuff used to braze tungsten carbide lathe tools and such.
