Re: [TCML] rolled cap oil color

Hi David,

I personally don't think that I've ever seen dielectric oil (Shell Diala
or something similar) completely colorless, even when brand new
in the shipping container. It always has a yellowish hue to it, from
my personal experience. Now the mineral oil that you purchase
in the drug store or in larger quantities at the farm coop is in fact
clear and colorless and I'm assuming that is what was originally
used in the construction of your homemade units.  I suppose
leaching of the solid dielectric medium into the oil over time could
eventually darken it. Also, these TCBOR caps that you mention
are 20 years or more old now, too so that would allow ample
time for the gradual "leaching" to occur, if that is what's going
on. I'm assuming that your oil is only colored, but still clear and
not "cloudy"? IMHO, cloudy would be "bad".

My $.02,
Another David (Rieben)

I have three old ,early 1990's , home rolled T.C.B.O.R.  caps with pole trans oil in them.  The oil has been slowly turning from clear to a yellow color .  What could be causing this ?  They still seem to function ok.  Thanks, Dave B
