Hi Steve
Perhaps the rotary failed to fire at the right moment during a resonant
voltage rise. When using a rotary with a NST, you should have a short safety
gap. A short safety gap should prevent the tank cap from driving the voltage
too high. One should play the conservative when using NSTs and resist the
temptation to lengthen the gaps. Putting he 30mA with the 60 Ma in parallel
will work just fine.
