Air caps would work just as well as any other cap in a TC. In fact, they 
would have one MASSIVE wonderful quality, they would last forever :) In the 
event of overvoltage, they would simply arc out (BANG) and return to normal.

I know an excellent design for one using stacked horizontal plates and 
plastic insulators. The first step is locating a football-field sized area 
for the plates.........

now do you see the problem? ;)
