If you get the toroid too close it acts as a single turn short circuit and
will not allow your upper turns in the sec to be effective.

Good rule of thumb:  Base of toroid approx 3.5 inches above the last turn of
sec. coil for med size coils.  If possible spacewind the last 4-5 turns of
sec coil --- use plastic fishline and then remove it later after your first
coil of sec insulation is applied.
