I've never smelt pure NOx, but I know what ozone smells like, due to leaks. The first facility I built kept shutting down, due to OSHA 12 hour limits. It turned out to be ground level ozone, due to cars. I never smelt it. We had to reset the monitors to the 8 hour limit, to keep it running. ________________________________ From: Yurtle Turtle <yurtle_t@xxxxxxxxx> To: Tesla Coil Mailing List <tesla@xxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, December 10, 2013 12:02 AM Subject: Re: [TCML] What do Tesla Coil strikes do to galvanising? I've built ozone facilities for both water (150 million gallons per day) and waste water (60 MGD). I've always heard you could smell it during lightning storms, but have never noticed it, except for around copiers that need their filters replaced, and Tesla coils. ________________________________ From: David Rieben <drieben@xxxxxxx> To: Tesla Coil Mailing List <tesla@xxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Monday, December 9, 2013 8:10 PM Subject: Re: [TCML] What do Tesla Coil strikes do to galvanising? Hmm, interesting but methinks that smell is likely ozone. I have also noticed that same odor around active photostatic copiers as well as "ozone" air purifiers. And I have smelt a sharp, but somewhat different than "ozone" odor, in my garage after an extended run of my high powered jacob's ladder display and these noxious fumes also eventually lead to coughing and asthma like symptoms with prolonged exposure in a poorly vetillated garage. I would assume "that" odor to more likely be the NOx compunds. I'm thinking list member Adam, aka "yurtle turtle's" input may prove of value to this discussion, as I understand that he works with commercial O3 generators designed to purify drinking water for a public utility. Stands to reason that he would really know what O3 smells like :-) David Rieben Frosty <frosty90@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: >Hi all, > >Im almost certain that the 'bleachy' smell of corona or sparks (corona >seems to produce more) is mostly NO2 rather than ozone, if you have ever >put copper into concentrated nitric acid and got a whif of it, the smell is >exactly the same, first time i did it my immediate thought was the smell of >corona discharge!
